The Buzzards kept their undefeated metro season alive on Saturday, grinding out a hard-fought 7-point win over the Clam Chowder Boys in one of the most hotly contested matches of the year.
The Buzzards came out swinging in the first quarter, piling on five first-quarter goals to take early control. Stephen "Po" Zenishek opened his account with a blistering 3-goal term and a big boy stiff arm to boot. Coach Richard Lozano had everyone thinking it was the 90s when he slotted one home, and Rhiannon "Rain" Duryea was everywhere and nabbed a nifty behind to kick off a stellar day at the forward line.
The Clams managed a single major through veteran Dave Zitko, with a point from Brendan "Frodo" Burke keeping them in touch.
Buzzards led 5.1 (31) to Clam Chowder Boys 1.1 (7) at the first break.
Momentum shifted in the second quarter as the Clam Chowder Boys turned up the heat to a strong simmer. Newcomer Peter Witcomb (new to the Blues, but definitely not new to Aussie Rules) made the trek to St. Louis from Ft. Leonard Wood and made an immediate impact with 2 goals and a behind. Paul "Pennie" Xavier and another newcomer Oz added to the tally with a few behinds, narrowing the gap.
Meanwhile, the Buzzards were kept goalless for the term. Troy "Kirky" Kirk missed a few gettable shots (his words, not ours), finishing with 3 behinds, and Blues captain Alex Tajkowski added another minor. At halftime, the Boyz had shrunk the lead to just 7 points:
Buzzards 5.5 (35) to Clam Chowder Boys 4.4 (28) at half.
The third term belonged to the Clams again. CBB Team captain Joel "Frosty" Friesen took over with two big goals, Peter added his third of the day, and Malik Mehmedspahic chimed in with a behind to continue a strong start to his first season. The Buzzards could only manage a lone goal from Kirky, plus a behind from Po, surrendering the lead heading into the final quarter:
Buzzards 6.7 (43) to Clam Chowder Boys 7.6 (48).
With the game on the line, Po returned to hero mode, bagging another 3 goals in the final quarter to bring his tally to six on the day. Cap chipped in a crucial behind as the Buzzards surged back in front. The Clams fought to the end, with a goal from Dave and a behind from Pennie, but it wasn’t quite enough.
The Buzzards held on to win: 9.8 (62) to the Clam Chowder Boys 8.7 (55).
