Join us for training Monday and Thursday nights at 6 pm
With their second metro in just over a week, and their first metro of August, your St. Louis Blues put on quite the show. Fresh off their victory Monday, July 21st, The Clam Chowder Boys came into Saturday hoping to extend their winning streak. Unbeknownst to them, The Buzzards were already circling.
It was indeed a fine day for footy, as the Blues kicked off Saturday with an Aussie Rules 101 session led by Dave Zitko. Dave’s masterclass saw a few new faces and some of the community’s youths eager to learn the game, along with a few rookie Blues sharpening their skills before the metro action began.
The first quarter opened up with some solid back-and-forth play. Each team showed great ball movement both with their handball and kick connections, but the morning winds may have played a role in the low-scoring quarter. Only minutes into the quarter, we would see a 1-1 deadlock broken by a major score from ruckman DeÁndra Morgan Jr., putting the Buzzards up 1-1-7 to the Clam Chowder Boys 0-1-1. The Buzzards would continue their pressure, adding a couple of more behinds to their total. Not looking to be outdone, the Clam Chowder Boys were able to find their first major of the game through Troy Kirk. The Clam Chowder Boys would score again, with just 5 minutes left in the quarter, as James Heuston took a mark from newcomer Pat Frew and was able to slot in through the center posts. The Clam Chowder Boys would end the quarter up 2-1-13 to the Buzzards 1-3-9.
The Clam Chowder Boys looked to keep the pressure, as they started the second quarter with two early behinds. Unfortunately for them, this pressure would wake up the Buzzards. Moments after going up by an additional two points, the Buzzards would hit back with their first major of the quarter. Rhiannon Duryea, recent Western Regionals Champion, would find herself wide open at the face of the goal thanks to a timely sheppard from Stephen Zenishek. Shortly after play resumed, the Buzzards’ defense was able to make a big clearance, leading to a mark and goal from Zenishek, his first of the day. This would be the story of the quarter, as the Buzzards put on a scoring clinic with Dave Zitko, Paul Xavier, Carlos Nascimento, and Zenishek once again, added to the tally. The Clam Chowder Boys would have one major from their captain, Joel Friesen. The first half would end Buzzards 7-3-45, Clam Chowder Boys 3-4-22.
Fans would see a continuation of the scoring clinic in the third quarter, as the Buzzards opened up with two early majors from Zenishek. Pressure continued from the Buzzards, as the Clam Chowder Boys' defense was unable to hold back the onslaught of kicks with Zachary Schmidt and Zitko adding to the goal count halfway through the quarter. Kirk (2) would try to will the Clam Chowder Boys back into the game with a major of his own, but the Buzzards would fire back with two from Dalton Foster. At the end of the third quarter, Buzzards 13-6-84, Clam Chowder Boys 4-4-28.
Scoring was on the menu and the Buzzards were feasting, with Zitko and Zenishek scoring two early ones in the fourth quarter. The Clam Chowder Boys would catch a bit of a break, as a free kick was awarded to Pat Frew, leading to the Chowder’s first major of the quarter. Minutes later, the Clam Chowder Boys would find their scoring touch again. Joel Friesen was able to take advantage of some free real estate out of the midfield and found the goal for his second on the day. Dalton Foster and rookie Eli Benner, tightened the Buzzards’ grip, as they slotted home a major each in the dying minutes of the game. Final score from Forest Park, Buzzards 17-8-110 to Clam Chowder Boys 6-5-41.
We’d like to thank all of our participants in the Aussie Rules 101 event, as well as all of our fans who gave us a great atmosphere for the metro. We’d also like to extend a big thank you to Charles at Draft Pick Video, LLC for their services in taping the game for us.
Best
Dalton Foster – A mainstay on the back line, he got a rare chance up front and didn't dissappoint with 3 well deserved goals
Dave Zitko – Another game, another strong performance from the Navy Blues' torch bearer
Pat Frew – Running through tackles like a man possessed, the CCBs and Blues are glad Pat found his way back to the oval after a few years devoted to Rugby at Mizzou.
