Join us for training every Monday and Thursday, 6 - 8 pm, at Cricket Field in Forest Park
In the second installment of the 2025 Metro season, the Buzzards circled the Clam Chowder Boys at Cricket Field in Forest Park to come out on top 12.6 (78) to 5.1 (37) on a rainy Monday evening matchup.
Unlike the first game in the Metro season, there was no time wasted in the first term scoring. Bombers Rugby Football Club forward, Justin Ludwig made their Aussie Rules debut by quickly finding the big sticks for two consecutive strikes, putting the Buzzards up by 12 in the first five minutes of the contest. This was quickly negated as Clam Chowder Boys captain, Joel Friesen and midfielder Troy Ostermann were able to notch matching goals to tie the game up. With the midfield under control of the Buzzards, ruck DeÁndra Morgan Jr was able to follow the ball down the field and snag a sneaky goal for their first of their career. With such a hip catch phrase "Kick it to Kirky!" Forward Troy Kirk was able to whip in his first banana of the night to end the first term with a Buzzard lead of 26 - 12.
The second quarter began and still there was still no sign of rain. Buzzards captain, Alex Tajkowski was able to slither their way through the midfield to send the Sherrin off their boot for a major score. After the reset and ball up at center, an almost identical set up unfolded as Tajkowski found Dalton Foster all alone in the forward pocket. A set shot sailed over the goal square and was rushed in for a behind. Joel Friesen was able to notch 2 more majors in the second term, but it was not enough to contain the Buzzards as Kirk found the goal twice, followed by Tajkowski and Luke Schofield. The first half ended with a Buzzards lead of 57 - 24.
After a short break for half, the sky opened and the rain that was forecasted came pouring down. The footy always becomes harder to handle as it gets wet, but the new Sherrin from Play Aussie did not seem to mind the wet conditions. Dave Zitko, celebrating their 100th USAFL game, snagged two goals without his new white Asics boots. The old man still has it! The rain did start to become a factor as puddles began to appear on the field and minor scores started to pile up for the Buzzards. Clam Chowder Forward, James Heuston, fresh off holiday, was excited to be out playing with the boys and was able to celebrate their return to play with a goal. Even this would not help the deficit that had grown. Third quarter time ended with a Buzzard lead of 41 points.
The game was abandoned at the start of the 4th quarter as the risk of injury and damage to the training grounds grew.
Dave's 100th
Dave Zitko achieved a huge milestone in the USAFL with their 100th game. Starting their career in 2009, Zitko has been a staple in the Midwest Football scene. They also had the chance to play overseas with the Harvey Brunswick Leschenault Football Club of the South West Football League. The skills and knowledge gained by Dave has been a vital part of the St. Louis club revival.
