The 2025 USAFL campaign began on Saturday, May 3rd with a scoring parade that ended with STLAFC dominating their three opponents 24.23.167 to 0.4.4.
It was a cool and windy morning to start a long day at Gillham Park in Kansas City. The Blues got to work fast against the Des Moines Roosters with a series of behinds from the get-go. Ethan Bradley was able to find the big sticks and put the Blues up by a 10-point margin within the first 10 minutes. Also in that span of time, Tim Castellari, who was switched from Defender to Forward was on the receiving end of an awkward tackle that put them out of play for the remainder of the day. After the only loss of the day, the Boys in Blue did not let up on the gas. While Senior Coach Rich Lozano has instilled a team identity of "No U-turns" and to always look for a player running through, that did not stop Troy Kirk from sinking a gorgeous banana from deep in the forward pocket for an outstanding goal. A few other goals from our vets widened the first half lead and debutant Luke Schofield notched their first USAFL goal in their first league match. This weekend also saw a return of James Kinder (formerly of the Seattle Grizzlies) who has taken time away from playing after relocating and starting a family. He was an immediate impact player who helped control the midfield and was a part of several scoring plays. after 40 minutes of play, the first game of the day ended with a 60-3 win for St. Louis.
There was a break in play for St. Louis in this tournament but that did not stop the rookies from grabbing some extra playing time. Ezra Hightower and Brendan Burke put on a Buffaloes guernsey and went straight into their next game.
After the two-game break, St. Louis stretched out and stared down the barrel of a back-to-back set against the Kansas City Power and Oklahoma Buffaloes. Continuing in their previous ways, St. Louis got on the board fast with goals from Captain, Alex Tajkowski and Joel Friesen but the first half was ended before the allotted time due to an unfortunate injury of a Power player. After medical attention was given, the second half began and the Blues kept marching. Newcomer, Troy Ostermann, has found a home in the midfield. Their agility and determination allowed them to collect the Sherrin off the deck but the smaller tournament field allowed Kansas City to quickly pounce and apply pressure on the rookie who is still learning the game. A couple of goals from Full Forward Stephen Zenishek helped grow the lead but without a full 40 minutes of play, a smaller victory of 39-0 was achieved.
Immediately following the game, the Blues lined up for their final game of the day with their eyes on the prize! The only thing standing in their way was a herd of Buffaloes. After putting up 35 points in the first half against Oklahoma, the veterans decided it was time for the youngbloods to get a crack at scoring. Passing up on sure goals from sure foots, the footy was put in the hands of these greener scorers. Aaron Elizondo found the big sticks twice with massive goals. Ezra Hightower will have to wait on their goal celebration à la Xavier Duursma but got on the score sheet with their first USAFL point and Rhiannon Duryea got an unlucky bounce on the rough field conditions and settled for a behind as well. This ended the day with a 68-1 victory and secured the beer!
One to Look Out For
The defense did not see much work this weekend but when the ball did manage to find its way in the back half, it was quickly disrupted and sent back out. Eli Benner has only been with the club a few months but is showing great promise with athleticism and agility.
