The Der Steinkrug

St. Louis Claims 1st Annual Der Steinkrug

USAFL staple and local legend, Dan Sarbacker, who has ties to both St. Louis and Madison decided there was a need for some more friendly competition in the Midwest. Thus, the Der Steinkrug (informally known as the Suds Cup) was born. St. Louis and Wisconsin have competed in years past, but this game was the first in a new, ongoing, tradition.

Rumor has it that St. Louis brought the heat as Madison, WI saw the temperature surpass 90°F for the first time this year. Due to heat and player count, this match was played as a 4x15 contest between the two clubs. A 2 pm ball up saw St. Louis take the lead early as James Heuston notched two major scores in the opening term (later to go 5.0.30 on the day). A constant fight from the Wombats saw the score gap fluctuate as the game heated up under the hot Wisconsin sun.

In the waning moments of the third quarter, signs of heat exhaustion and limited reserves hit St. Louis and saw the Wombats clawing their way back within a single goal to tie the game. A brief chat before the fourth quarter, Senior Coach Rich Lozano gave the bit of advice of “Effort is not a skill. It is a choice.” This willed the Blues to dig down deep and to pull away in the final term to seal their second USAFL victory of the season.

USAFL Revolution debutant, Joel Friesen, was awarded Best on Ground due to their direct involvement in play, and disruptive defensive play. Carlos Nascimento was awarded Best off Ground, an award always presented to the traveling teams best player after the night on the town concludes.
