Blues Mauled by Cats
On Saturday, St. Louis opened the back half of their season with a three game homestand. A 3 pm ball up gave birth to an unseasonal cooler temperature of 80°F. The first term proved to be a warmup for both clubs as the Sherrin was evenly contested and ended up low scoring. An early mark from Stephen Zenishek in the forward half gave the Blues an opportunity to take the lead but an expected easy goal sailed through for a behind. This was St. Louis' only chance to take a lead in the game.
An impressive performance of USA Revolution prospect, Dalton Foster and the defenders kept the second term to a reasonable deficit, 8 to 29. A half time regrouping poised confidence on the St. Louis side but while the Blues were retooling strategy, Columbus were sharpening their claws.
Third quarter was a test of endurance and skills that St. Louis fell short on. Columbus' ability to dissect the St. Louis defense with series of handballs and precise kicks saw the Cats lead continue to climb. Paul Xavier was able to lead the midfielders to stop onslaught by disrupting Columbus' play and get the back to the St. Louis forward half but a tight defensive core of the Cats stopped any chance of St. Louis major scores and the Blues settled for a series of behinds.
Going into the fourth term, St. Louis was looking to stop the bleeding any way they could. While a victory was not in the cards, Senior Coach Rich Lozano gave the group the task of focusing on ball movement. St. Louis was able to accomplish the task with tired legs and lungs but were unable to sneak anything major past the Cats. The final siren sounded on a defeat 13 to 72.
After launching into Division III in 2023, St. Louis has looked to make strides in play by challenging themselves with higher opponents and although the score was not what the team desired, they can be proud of showing up for the test.
